The Nantucket Historical Association is one of many local organizations that employ interns for the summer months.
Five interns currently work at the NHA, with duties ranging from museum education to curatorial work to external affairs work, according to Kim McCray, director of interpretation and education.
Kaitlin Lloyd, a 23-year-old intern from New Mexico with museum experience as both a docent and an activities planner for children, is a graduate student at North Carolina State University at Raleigh.
Lloyd specializes in museum studies and is planning to work at a museum in the future, hopefully with children.
"I have never been to Nantucket before, but working at the NHA has been great."
Lloyd works with children in the museum's Discovery Center, helps with the NHA lecture series and works "behind-the-scenes" for both the museum and the association as a whole.
Christina Smiraglia, 25, also serves as a museum education intern. Smiraglia graduated from the University of Delaware in 2004 and earned her master's degree in museum studies in 2006 from George Washington University. Smiraglia plans to earn her doctorate in education at Harvard University starting this fall.
Smiraglia had her first museum experience when she was still in high school, having worked as an intern for her hometown's historical society
"I want to continue working fulltime as a museum educator," she said.
The two additional Museum Education interns have equally impressive resumés. Claudia Cervantes, a graduate student in Museum Studies at the University of Florida, is the current vice president of the Society of Art History graduates.
Gina Neureuther, NHA's interpretation intern, earned her bachelor's degree in history at State University of New York at Brockport and has a master's degree in museum studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Lindsay Baker is a development intern. A rising senior at Univeristy of Pennsylvania, Baker came to Nantucket looking to work for a smaller museum. Regardless of the size of NHA's museum, Baker is impressed with the resources available as well as the people working to preserve Nantucket's history.
Each of the interns at the NHA has embraced what opportunities this summer has offered and will be prepared for a rewarding and enjoyable career in the future with the knowledge gained working in the museum and around the island.
